A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
